What is a Brit Milah?

A Brit Milah (also called a Bris) is the Jewish religious ceremony in which a baby boy is circumcised, usually on the eighth day after birth, unless there are medical reasons to delay.

The words “Brit Milah” mean “Covenant of Circumcision.” This ritual goes back thousands of years to the time of Abraham and symbolizes the special bond between the Jewish people and God.

During the ceremony, the baby is welcomed into the Jewish community. There are blessings, the baby is given his Hebrew name, and family and friends often gather to share in the joy.

While it’s a sacred religious tradition, parents can also make the Brit Milah personal and meaningful for their family, choosing prayers, songs, and the setting that feel right for them.
